Who's Responsible for Repairing Your Phone Line Fault?

Telstra owns the telephone line infrastructure throughout Australia and is responsible for keeping up its network to the network boundary point. They'll rectify any faults up to the MDF (Main Distribution Frame) or Network Boundary Point of your assumptions. You're then responsible for the setup and maintenance of all cabling, telephone wiring and telephone equipment beyond this network boundary point. This is where our telephone line technicians can assist you.

Specialised telephone line testing equipment enables us to diagnose and find your phone line error. Our telephone line technicians will have the ability to ascertain whether or not a cable was crushed, damaged through rust, cut or shorting out and will then have the ability to fix your phone line.

What is the Network Boundary Point?

The network boundary point is usually at your very first phone socket or in the main distribution frame of an apartment block or business building.

Your phone carrier is responsible for keeping its network / cabling to the Network Boundary Point on your premises. Beyond this stage, all installations and maintenance of telephone cabling and phone equipment is your responsibility.

How to Do an"Isolation Test"

Follow these simple measures to see if you're able to isolate the fault on your phone line.

  • Unplug all equipment from the telephone sockets, for example, alarm, answering machine, Foxtel, bedroom telephones, fax machine, modem, telephone line powered desk lamps.
  •  Plug into a normal working phone (not cordless) to a single socket at a time.
  • If the telephone line is cracking, scratchy, noisy or there's no dial tone, try using another phone to confirm the phone line.
  • Check all the other phone sockets in precisely the identical manner. If you have ADSL, consider using another ADSL filter. A respectable brand, such as C10 Communications, may offer a reliable outcome.
  • In case you've discovered a clear dial tone then try the modem, leaving the ADSL filter away.
  • If your modem won't sync (DSL lights should stop rooting ) try another modem. It's always wise to keep your old working modem for all these instances like this.
  • If the modem takes too long or you can't locate a phone socket that does not have any noise then you have to contact us.
  •  If you can't find a dial tone on your telephone line (and it ought to be there) then you'll also need to contact us.
  • In case you've got nude ADSL (normally no dial tone) and your modem still has problems you will need contact us.
The"Isolation Test" outlined above can help to ascertain whether the issue is on the cable system in the road or in your own premises.

Having a problem with your home phone service?

Following is a step-by-step procedure you can follow to quickly and easily determine what the issue is.

  1. We recommend completing a simple Isolation Test. Please note, this process only applies to copper (PTSN) Home Phone Services.
  2.  You will have to unplug all equipment from all of the phone sockets in the premises - such as handsets, line filters, modems, and faxes.
  3. Once this is done, leave everything simmer for 5 minutes.
  4. Then, plug a single CORDED handset into your phone socket. This is the ideal method to check if your phone lines are working correctly.
  5. If you don't have a corded handset available, you can alternately test your cordless handset on a working line, such as a neighbour's or a friend.

This process can help to determine whether a problem exists inside your phone line or inside your gear.

Does your phone line work with a corded phone? If this is the case, the equipment is the problem and replacing it should solve your issue.

When an Isolation Test reveals your phone lines aren't functioning properly, you can lodge a Fault with us and we'll work to get the problem sorted.

You can lodge a Fault here.

Lodging a fault will initiate the process of having a tech locate the source of the problem and solving it. It's probably an appointment with a technician will be required, so one of our staff will be in contact with you to arrange a time which you may be home.
